      Hey Dad!

Hey Dad! is a digital programme for South African dads of 4- to 6-year-old children. Accessed on cell phones, Hey Dad! offers dads short, fun and affordable activities, using everyday items, that they can do with their children in their own space and in their own time. Hey Dad! is designed to suit the way modern African families live, learn and work today. Play is often neglected due to having to prioritise work, time constraints, limited play/educational resources and lack of confidence or knowledge.

The aim of Hey Dad! is to improve father-child relationships by eliminating some of the pain points associated with play and teaching. By using the Hey Dad! programme dads not only bond but also become enablers of learning while their children benefit socially, physically and cognitively. Hey Dad! is available as an online and offline mobile app. The offline version of the app eliminates the data cost barrier that prevents the vast majority of South Africans accessing digital content. Hey Dad! is also available as a channel on Ayoba – Africa’s ‘chat andchannel’ app – powered by MTN. Ayoba reaches over10 million monthly active users.

Hey Dad! is a partnership between EISH and COUNT Africa, made possible by ‘development and testing’ funding from Innovation Edge.To learn more about why Innovation Edge invested in Hey Dad! click here. Innovation Edge invested in Hey Dad! because there is no app that targets South African fathers with practical but fun learning activities, that they can do with their young children at home. Furthermore, the programme will explore whether fathers can be encouraged to have a more engaged role in their children’s education if barriers associated with physical location and time are removed.

      PlaySA – PLAY to Learn

Children love to play. PlaySA offers ECD practitioners and Foundation Phase teachers courses that show them how integrate this natural behaviour into their daily teaching routines.

Teachers register for free online and complete the training course in their own time and space. At the end of their training they receive an accredited certificate that contributes to their PDP.

EISH developed the theory and practical play-based components for the Grade 1 to 3 cohort. All sessions in the course were linked to the CAPS.

Harambee – Second Chance Matric Programme

The Harambee Second Chance Matric programme prepares matric rewrite candidates for their supplementary exams and optimises their chances of attaining a matric certificate, which in turn opens further learning and/or employment opportunities for them.

EISH has created bespoke, curriculum-aligned Second Chance courses in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and English First Additional Language. The online guided study programme includes video lessons, supporting notes, audio-dictionaries, self-assessments and past exam papers.

The intention of the Second Chance programme is to provide matric rewrite candidates with a useful and comprehensive online support intervention that potentially eliminates information overload, identifies and plugs gaps in their learning behaviours and content knowledge, and prepares them practically for exam success.

      #FemaleForward

EISH produced 15 short profile videos for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom’s global campaign #FemaleForward. The programme works with female politicians to develop knowledge and skills in order to win candidate nominations and upcoming elections or to be elected to internal party leadership positions.

In the 2021 series, female politicians from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Tanzania, Tunisia, Malawi, Guinea, Somalia and South Africa, were profiled. The politicians representing liberal political parties shared what they would like to see change for women in African politics and how they are working towards dismantling barriers that stand in the way of women’s political participation.
